BYK-023 is a VOC-free, silicone-containing defoamer designed for use in aqueous dispersion coatings, printing inks, overprint varnishes, and cleaning agents. It is particularly effective in waterborne coatings and printing inks, and can also be used in hybrid ink formulations. The defoamer is compatible with acrylate-based resins and features excellent defoaming properties. It is labeled as VOC-free and belongs to the chemical family of polysiloxanes. BYK-023 is widely used for its ability to control foam and improve the overall quality of coatings and inks.

Coatings Industry

BYK-023 is recommended for emulsion paints with a PVC of 30-50 and which are manufactured on a stirene acrylate, acrylate or terpolymer basis. The additive is also suitable for use in hybrid systems.
Recommended Levels
0.05-0.8% additive (as supplied) based on total formulation. The above recommended levels can be used for orientation. Optimal levels are determined through a series
of laboratory tests.
Incorporation and Processing Instructions
Due to its high incompatibility, the defoamer must be incorporated at high shear forces to ensure a good distribution. Otherwise defects may occur in the system.

Printing Inks and Overprint Varnishes
BYK-023 is recommended for defoaming printing inks and overprint varnishes based on stirene acrylate or acrylate. The additive is also suitable for use in hybrid systems.
Recommended Levels
0.2-1% additive (as supplied) based on total formulation. The above recommended levels can be used for orientation. Optimal levels are determined through a series of laboratory tests.
Incorporation and Processing Instructions
Due to its high incompatibility, the defoamer must be incorporated at high shear forces to ensure a good distribution. Otherwise defects may occur in the system.

Household, Industrial, and Commercial Cleaning Agents
BYK-023 is a silicone-containing defoamer for aqueous care products and cleaning agents, which can demonstrate its considerable defoaming effect already during production. This effect is maintained after application.
Recommended Levels
0.1-0.5% additive (as supplied) based on the total formulation. The above recommended levels can be used for orientation. Optimal levels are determined through a series of laboratory tests.
Incorporation and Processing Instructions
The additive is preferably added at the start of formulation, however it is possible to use it at any stage of manufacture.

Storage & Handling

Storage Information

Storage and transportation between 0 °C and 40 °C. Temperature-sensitive emulsion. If the temperature has exceeded or fallen below the recommended range, the product has to be tested before use and, if necessary, be re-emulsified at room temperature.
