Application Information
  • Functional V-298 is an additive that confers a tack or stringiness to a lubricant.
  • Its extremely light color makes it especially useful in spindle lubricants for textile machinery.
  • It may also be used to provide adherence in way oils and chain lubricants, stringiness in greases, and aerosol resistance in mist and pneumatic-system lubricants.

Technical Details & Test Data

Treatment Level
  • A starting treatment level for spindle oil is 0.1% to 0.5%; for a way lube is 0.25%; for chain lubes the treatment range is 0.25% to 1.0%.
  • Minimization of hydrocarbon aerosol escape from mist-lubricated and pneumatic equipment requires about 0.5% in the mist oil.
  • The best treatment level for greases is left to the formulator. Since there are no standardized test methods for tackiness, the required treatment level is best determined by experimentation by the user.

Storage & Handling

Storage Information
  • Due to the viscosity of Functional V-298, elevated temperature (about 150°F or 65°C) can facilitate handling, but temperatures over 200°F (95°C) should be avoided.
  • Safe handling precautions are the same as those to be taken with the base oilLubricants using Functional V-298 are sensitive to shear, so mechanical shearing during blending and handling should be minimized.
  • Where moderate shear is encountered, Functional V-188 is recommended instead.
