Application information

Preventol® P 91 is a blend of bronopol and isothiazolines. Combined these two active ingredients achieve a broad and balanced spectrum of activity against bacteria (aerobic and anaerobic) mold fungi and yeast. Preventol® P 91 is a colorless liquid with a slight odor. This preservative is miscible with water, alcohols and glycols, allowing easy and flexible processing. Preventol® P 91 is a water-borne, solvent-free formulation that is free of any VOC contributing component. In winter, measures must be taken to prevent from freezing. Temperatures of 104 °F / 40 °C and higher are to be avoided to prevent decomposition reactions. Preventol ® P 91 is distinguished by a relatively rapid onset of action. This enables the effective prevention of subsequent damage and also of the formation of enzymes from the very beginning. It is recommended to conduct preliminary tests on compatibility and biological effectiveness for each new application. The approved dosage levels ranges are provided in the chapter “Directions for use” further below, but variables such as pH, temperature, initial germ count or intended storage time of the product to be preserved should be taken into account.
Stability range
Preventol® P 91 is best used in acidic to weakly alkaline environments. The use of Preventol® P 91 at higher alkalinity (pH > 8.5 - 9.0), especially if exposed for longer periods of time, may lead to accelerated degradation of the active ingredient. Degradation of the active ingredients may also be accelerated at temperatures exceeding 104 °F / 40 °C, therefore Preventol ® P 91 should be added at later stages of the production process when lower temperatures apply. As with any product, use of the products mentioned in this publication in a given application must be tested (including field testing, etc.) by the user in advance to determine suitability.
Material Compatibility
Preventol® P 91 is compatible with high quality stainless steel. Compatibility tests are recommended for other metallic materials. Plastic materials like PVC, PE, HDPE, PTFE are compatible and suitable for the handling and storage of Preventol ® P 91.

Product Usage

Directions for use
It is a violation of federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling. The following guidance is given as an approximation for each use pattern, but field-testing is recommended to achieve optimum effectiveness.
General use directions
in industrial applications, Preventol ® P 91 can be dosed directly, or by preparing a stock solution immediately prior to application, either by open pouring or by metered pump. For process application treatments Preventol ® P 91 may be slug dosed initially when the system is not noticeably fouled and reduced to a maintenance dose once microbial control is evident. More frequent and higher dosing should be used when contamination is heavy. The recommended dosing regimes (slug/maintenance dose) and the dose rates are as indicated in the individual use area instructions. For preservation during the manufacture, distribution, storage and use of industrial, consumer, household and institutional products Preventol ® P 91 is best added at any liquid phase as late as possible during the manufacturing process. It may be added by pre-dissolving in any water to be incorporated into the formulation. Add after any heating stage, or when the product has been cooled below 40 °C. Ensure good mixing and even distribution throughout the product. Do not apply this product in any way that will contact workers or other persons.
Water-based printing inks and fountain solutions For water-based printing inks dose with Preventol® P 91 at 0.05 - 0.30 %. During the use of fountain solutions, shock dose with Preventol ® P 91 at 0.05 - 0.30 % depending on the contamination. Apply once weekly in the fount reservoir as a normal routine or more frequently, if required. For fountain solution concentrates dose with Preventol® P 91 at 0.5 - 6.0 %.
Metal working fluids
For use in soluble oils, semi-synthetic and synthetic fluids. Add directly to the sump (with agitation) and allow to circulate for about one hour before shutdown. Preventol ® P 91 may be incorporated in the metalworking fluid concentrate by the manufacturer who should ensure that any incompatibility will not affect the efficacy. In diluted fluids add 500 to 3000 ppm of Preventol® P 91.

Absorbant clays, corn cobs, and ground wood
For preservation, impregnate absorbent clays, corn cobs, or ground wood with Preventol® P 91 to inhibit the growth of odor causing bacteria by spraying or pouring solution of 0.1 to 0.3 % Preventol ® P 91.

Paints and coatings
For the preservation of latex based paints and coatings add Preventol® P 91 at 0.05 to 0.35 % based upon the final formulation volume.
Polymer emulsions
For the preservation of acrylic, styrene-acrylic, polyvinyl acetate and other latex emulsions, photographic emulsions, silicone and other antifoam emulsion systems.
Add Preventol® P 91 at 0.05 to 0.38 % based upon the final formulation volume.

Chemical toilet deodorants
To inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria in toilets, chemical deodorant concentrates should incorporate Preventol ® P 91 so that the diluted chemical toilet deodorant contains 500 to 3000 ppm of Preventol ® P 91.
Adhesives
For the preservation of adhesives add Preventol® P 91 at 0.05 to 0.30 % based upon the final formulation volume.
Mineral slurries
For the preservation of mineral slurries add Preventol® P 91 at 0.05 to 0.30% based upon the final formulation volume.
Cleaners and detergents
For the preservation of consumer, household and institutional products such as dishwashing liquids, surface cleaners, detergents and polishes add Preventol ® P 91 at 0.05 to 0.20% based upon the final formulation volume.
General preservation
For the preservation of industrial products such as pigments, surfactants and raw materials for the manufacture of industrial and consumer products, also industrial water additive formulations for use in processes such as boiler water and waste water products. For general preservation applications, Preventol® P 91 should be dosed at 0.05 to 0.3 % based on the final formulation volume.

Concrete admixtures
For the preservation of concrete admixtures based on polycarboxylates, lignosulphonates, naphtaline sulphonates, melamine sulphonates and other systems.
Add Preventol® P 91 at 0.05 to 0.30 % ppm based upon the final formulation volume.

Building materials
For the preservation of building materials add Preventol® P 91 at 0.05 to 0.25 % based upon the final formulation volume.

Paper mills - bulk paper
Add Preventol® P 91 directly into the hydropulper, machine chest or stock chest. Apply once weekly to once daily at 500 to 2000 ppm.
Paper mill process water Apply at a convenient point early in the process system (machine chest, constant head box or backwater
loop system). Dose Preventol ® P 91 once to three times daily at 10 to 250 ppm in the process water. This equates to 0.21 to 56 lb per ton of finished paper or paperboard.
Industrial cooling water
For use in cooling towers, evaporative condensers, open and closed loop cooling and stored (non-potable) water, industrial and/or commercial air washers, air conditioning and humidifying systems. Preventol ® P 91 will reduce the biofouling of pipe work, heat exchangers, and condenser tubes and minimize microbial-induced corrosion. Apply Preventol ® P 91 once weekly to once monthly to the sump or tank where turbulence and flow will ensure quick dissolution. Do not apply by open pouring of liquid to cooling water
systems; a metering pump delivery system is required for this use and application method. Shock dose (initial) Preventol® P 91 at 0.02 to 0.12 %. Subsequent dosing (maintenance) can be reduced to 0.005 to 0.03 %.
