It is typically synthesized via the Knoevenagel condensation of vanillin and malonic acid diethylester in the presence of secondary amines. Ferulic acid usually exists as the trans isomer and is water-soluble. When stored at room temperature, slow isomerization results in an equilibrium ratio of 23% cis and 77% trans.
